BREAKING--SERIES OF RAPID BLOWS TO WEST TEXAS AGRICULTURE: April 10, 2023, a dairy farm in Dimmitt, TX—about 60 miles southwest of Amarillo—exploded, killing ~18,000 dairy cows. It was one of the deadliest disasters for cows in history, wiping out 3% of the dairy herd in Texas. February 27, 2024, wildfire in same region, burned over 1 million acres, killed 7,000 cattle. Cause of the fire remains unknown. April 1, 2024, TX HHS reported Avian Influenza in Texas Panhandle dairy worker. April 9, 2024, the TX Ag announced Cal-Maine Foods in Farewell, TX—40 miles west of Dimmitt—will cull 2 million chickens after a case of H5N1.
