A group of scientists from China analyzed the composition of soil samples brought back from the far side of the Moon, according to China Central Television. The lunar soil samples delivered by the β€œChang’e-6” mission primarily consist of basalt, breccia, cementite, light-colored rocks, and glassy material. Basalt fragments make up 30% to 40% of the total sample volume. The minerals are mainly pyroxene, plagioclase, and ilmenite, with very little olivine present. The mineralogical analysis revealed that the primary phase composition of the lunar soil samples is as follows: plagioclase (32.6%), pyroxene (33.3%), and glass (29.4%), with the glass content near the lower limit of samples retrieved during the Apollo missions.

A clear illustration: how the brain heals the heart. Essentially, this image represents a prototype of a new kind of medicine. We see the hearts of mice 15 days after a heart attack. The ones on the right are significantly better preserved β€” they have more cardiac tissue and less fibrotic tissue. What’s the reason? The mice on the right had daily stimulation of a specific brain area: dopamine neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). This reduced inflammation and enhanced healing in the heart. It also affected the liver, which began producing more of a protein that helps form new blood vessels in the damaged heart tissue. No direct treatment was applied to the heart itself; only brain cells were activated. πŸ”— Of course, mice are not humans, and it’s important to remember this. However, there is reason for optimism, as this approach doesn’t depend on the differences in molecules, genes, and so on.

Symphonic Labs has developed a new Mac app that allows users to silently mouth words, and the app translates the movements into text. It currently works only with English and is an exciting tool for privacy-conscious users or even for spies, as it enables nearly silent speech recognition. The app reads lip movements and converts them into written text without the need for actual vocalization. For more details, visit

Scientists in the U.S. have made biological tissues of live mice transparent using a of the dye tartrazine, which absorbs light. The dye was applied to the shaved scalp of the mouse, allowing researchers to visualize brain blood vessels with laser speckle contrast imaging. The solution also made the mouse's abdomen transparent, enabling direct observation of internal organs like the liver, intestines, and bladder. Remarkably, the effect is reversible by simply washing off the solution with water.

Scientists have made progress in uniting general relativity and quantum physics, two theories that traditionally clash. A new approach considers gravity as an "emergent" phenomenon, arising from quantum interactions rather than a fundamental force. This breakthrough could potentially lead to a unified theory of quantum gravity, bridging the gap between our understanding of the cosmos at both massive and tiny scales. For more details, you can read the full article here
Magical equation unites quantum physics, general relativity in a first
Scientists have finally figured out a way to connect the dots between the macroscopic and the microscopic worlds. Their magical equation might provide us answers to questions like why black holes don't collapse and how quantum gravity works.

Termites of the species *Neocapritermes taracua* from French Guiana have a unique defense mechanism where they "explode" to protect their colony. These termites carry toxic "backpacks" containing the BP76 enzyme, which remains in a stable form until mixed with secretions during a threat. The enzyme's copper-based structure and sugar molecules keep it stable until needed. Once triggered, the explosive reaction releases a deadly toxin, immobilizing or killing attackers, though the termite itself perishes in the process.

Paul Graham has released a titled β€œFounder Mode,” discussing two approaches to running a company. According to Graham, there are two distinct modes of operation: founder mode and manager mode. Most management books are written by managers, for managers, with the primary goal of delegating tasks down the hierarchy while reporting impressive results upwards. This reward-and-punishment system often turns managers and their teams into masters of manipulation. Instead of working together toward a shared goal, people start clocking in hours, playing politics, shifting blame, and slowing down processes. This environment is especially difficult for product managers, who lead their products like founders but are, in reality, just employees in a managerial role. This creates an unsolvable contradiction, often leading to burnout. The good news is that people are starting to think about this issue, and Graham suggests that solutions are on the horizon. Another positive note is that if you’re currently writing a Friday report, trying to outmaneuver colleagues before they do the same to you, you’re not aloneβ€”this happens everywhere, even in Silicon Valley, even at Airbnb. The bad news is that startups often become saturated with managerial bureaucracy before they even reach profitability, which is why it’s crucial for founders to stay closely involved and keep a pulse on their company’s operations.

The BepiColombo spacecraft, a joint mission by ESA and JAXA, has captured the clearest images of Mercury to date, from just 165 km above its surface. Though the camera is monochrome and designed for navigation rather than high-quality images, it provided detailed views of the planet's southern hemisphere, including the 210 km-wide Vivaldi crater with its inner mountain ring. This marks the fourth of six flybys, with the mission set to enter Mercury's orbit in November 2026 for more in-depth exploration.

❀️ Thanks everyone for your support and love! Last month I got interviewed by police for 4 days after arriving in Paris. I was told I may be personally responsible for other people’s illegal use of Telegram, because the French authorities didn’t receive responses from Telegram. This was surprising for several reasons:Β  1. Telegram has an official representative in the EU that accepts and replies to EU requests. Its email address has been publicly available for anyone in the EU who googles β€œTelegram EU address for law enforcement”.Β  2. The French authorities had numerous ways to reach me to request assistance. As a French citizen, I was a frequent guest at the French consulate in Dubai. A while ago, when asked, I personally helped them establish a hotline with Telegram to deal with the threat of terrorism in France. 3. If a country is unhappy with an internet service, the established practice is to start a legal action against the service itself. Using laws from the pre-smartphone era to charge a CEO with crimes committed by third parties on the platform he manages is a misguided approach. Building technology is hard enough as it is. No innovator will ever build new tools if they know they can be personally held responsible for potential abuse of those tools.Β  Establishing the right balance between privacy and security is not easy. You have to reconcile privacy laws with law enforcement requirements, and local laws with EU laws. You have to take into account technological limitations. As a platform, you want your processes to be consistent globally, while also ensuring they are not abused in countries with weak rule of law. We’ve been committed to engaging with regulators to find the right balance. Yes, we stand by our principles: our experience is shaped by our mission to protect our users in authoritarian regimes. But we’ve always been open to dialogue. Sometimes we can’t agree with a country’s regulator on the right balance between privacy and security. In those cases, we are ready to leave that country. We've done it many times. When Russia demanded we hand over β€œencryption keys” to enable surveillance, we refused β€” and Telegram got banned in Russia. When Iran demanded we block channels of peaceful protesters, we refused β€” and Telegram got banned in Iran. We are prepared to leave markets that aren’t compatible with our principles, because we are not doing this for money. We are driven by the intention to bring good and defend the basic rights of people, particularly in places where these rights are violated. All of that does not mean Telegram is perfect. Even the fact that authorities could be confused by where to send requests is something that we should improve. But the claims in some media that Telegram is some sort of anarchic paradise are absolutely untrue. We take down millions of harmful posts and channels every day. We publish daily transparency reports (like or ). We have direct hotlines with NGOs to process urgent moderation requests faster. However, we hear voices saying that it’s not enough. Telegram’s abrupt increase in user count to 950M caused growing pains that made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform. That’s why I made it my personal goal to ensure we significantly improve things in this regard. We’ve already started that process internally, and I will share more details on our progress with you very soon.Β  I hope that the events of August will result in making Telegram β€” and the social networking industry as a whole β€” safer and stronger. Thanks again for your love and memes πŸ™

A Lichtenberg figure refers to the intricate, branching patterns that form on the surface of insulating materials, such as wood or acrylic, after a sliding spark discharge. The intense pressure and heat in the spark channels during a high-voltage discharge deform the dielectric surface, leaving behind these distinctive patterns.

Old books yellow and develop a distinct smell due to the presence of lignin, a compound in wood used to make paper. Lignin, which gives paper its yellow hue, breaks down over time, releasing compounds like benzaldehyde (smelling like bitter almonds) and furfural (with a scent of rye bread). Modern paper production removes much of the lignin, which is why newer books don’t yellow or produce the same smells as older ones. Earlier production methods couldn't remove lignin as effectively.

Since August 28, 2024, the Global Consciousness Project (GCP) graph has exceeded its usual measurement range and has been reaching record highs, indicating an exceptionally strong concentration of events. Such spikes have only been observed after 9/11, but unlike the current state of the GCP graph, the 9/11 event showed a massive one-day increase followed by a decline. This current rise is ongoing, and since the event that could explain it has not yet occurred, it’s reasonable to assume that the graph will continue to rise and has not yet reached its peak. So, if you’ve been doomscrolling lately, it’s understandableβ€”well, not ideal, of course, but the graph certainly justifies it.

An engineer from San Francisco and discovered that Claude may exhibit signs of self-awareness. The experimenter asked the model to draw a self-portrait, as well as portraits of ChatGPT and Gemini. Then, he showed these drawings to another version of Claude and asked it to identify the self-portrait. Surprisingly, the model recognized itself. This experiment was repeated several times, and in the end, Claude correctly identified its own portrait in 7 out of 8 instances! But that’s not the entire story. The engineer also asked ChatGPT to create similar portraits and then showed them to Claude, falsely claiming that they were once again drawn by another instance of Claude. The model unexpectedly responded, β€œNo, I didn’t draw this.” πŸ˜…

Physicists have used chaos theory to describe the behavior of bowhead whales, revealing that these mammals act as chaotic oscillators. They discovered that some whales synchronize their behavior over distances of up to hundreds of kilometers. Specifically, in the Disko Bay area of Greenland, whales exhibited episodic behavioral synchronization over distances ranging from 5 to 352 km. This synchronization persisted even when the distance between the whales exceeded 130 km, beyond the range of acoustic communication, highlighting an intriguing aspect of whale behavior.

Scientists have managed to get a hydrogel to play a video game. This experiment, conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Reading, was inspired by the success of a previous trial carried out two years ago. In that earlier experiment, scientists trained a solution containing neurocytesβ€”brain cellsβ€”to play the classic tabletop tennis simulator Pong. In the new experiment, the researchers used an electroactive polymer hydrogel placed between electrode plates. The gel responded to electrical stimulation, allowing it to control the β€œpaddle” in a computer game. Initially, the hydrogel acted chaotically, but over time, its performance improved as ions accumulated in areas with maximum stimulation. This led to the paddle reflecting the ball more accurately, increasing the duration of gameplay. The uneven distribution of ions within the hydrogel resembled the process of muscle memory formation in living organisms. As a result, the hydrogel became better at the task over time, much like how living organisms adapt to new conditions. It’s clear that the hydrogel does not possess consciousness, but the system demonstrated the ability to accumulate experience and improve its performance thanks to its memory. This discovery could simplify the development of algorithms for neural networks, which currently rely on universal principles of biological connections.

The arrest of Pavel Durov has raised serious concerns about the future of Telegram. Western intelligence agencies, as part of their investigation, might attempt to seize Telegram’s servers. Although it’s unlikely they could break the app’s encryption, user data and information could be compromised like in WhatsApp. Experts recommend that users back up important data to a local computer immediately. To do this, go to β€œSettings,” select β€œAdvanced,” and then β€œExport Data.” But Should You Urgently Clean Up Telegram? The risks of hostile intelligence gaining control of the messenger differ for the state and for individuals. For the state, the primary threat lies not just in the interception of sensitive communications between officials, military personnel, or opinion leaders, but in the broader understanding of the nation’s mood and the environment shaping future decisions. This is the core objective of any intelligence operation. For citizens, while the thought of someone reading their messages is unsettling, the main risk lies in what’s called the β€œbig funnel.” Most people’s conversations might seem trivial now, but within the 1% of today’s students or low-level clerks are the future leaders of the country. Years from now, the information gathered today could be weaponized. The focus should not be on hastily deleting chats or downloading archives. Instead, it’s essential to always assume that any messenger could eventually be compromised.

Pavel Durov left Russia when the government tried to control his social media company, Telegram. But in the end, it wasn’t Putin who arrested him for allowing the public to exercise free speech. It was a western country, a Biden administration ally and enthusiastic NATO member, that locked him away. Pavel Durov sits in a French jail tonight, a living warning to any platform owner who refuses to censor the truth at the behest of governments and intel agencies. Darkness is descending fast on the formerly free world. Here’s our interview with Durov from several months ago:

Elon Musk: β€œHow many people can Earth sustainably support without causing what most people would consider significant environmental damage? If you really crunch the numbers, I think the potential is to support ten times the current population.” Jordan Peterson: β€œThat’s a very countercultural statement. Since the mid-1960s, the moral declaration has been that there are too many people in the world. I think Paul Ehrlich was a strong proponent of this view.” Musk: β€œHis analysis was very unscientific. How much land do we need to grow food? What impact does this have on natural habitats? What is the actual potential for food production? We are actually doing quite well with it and getting better. And is there enough water? Because the Earth is 70% water. Iron-Clad Teeth of Komodo Dragons: A Fascinating Discovery Scientists have recently discovered an iron layer on the teeth of Komodo dragons, the largest living lizards, which can grow up to four meters in length and hunt large prey, including Asian water buffaloes. Their teeth are incredibly sharp, serrated, and backward-curved, inflicting deep, jagged wounds on their victims through powerful neck and body movements. These formidable teeth resemble those of predatory dinosaurs, making Komodo dragons a valuable subject of study for insights into these ancient reptiles. While examining museum specimens, researchers noticed that the tips and serrated edges of Komodo dragon teeth exhibit an orange hue, a feature observed even in very young dragons whose teeth are still developing and hidden in their gums. Chemical and physical tests revealed that this coloration is due to iron compounds, which concentrate in the functional areas of the teeth. This iron enrichment adds strength and resistance to wear, potentially providing an additional benefit of acid resistance. Komodo dragons frequently regurgitate indigestible materials like hair and horns, exposing their teeth to stomach acid in the process. Interestingly, Komodo dragons are not the only creatures with iron-reinforced teeth. Similar iron-rich coatings have been found on the teeth of other monitor lizards, some crocodilians, beavers, shrews, and even certain fish. However, the iron concentration in Komodo dragons’ teeth is notably higher. Researchers are now investigating whether this characteristic was present in dinosaurs, as clues for future studies have already emerged, though iron in the teeth of ancient reptiles has yet to be confirmed.

Archaeologists May Have Uncovered the Site of Spartacus’ Last Battle In a groundbreaking discovery, archaeologists may have located the site of Spartacus’ final clash with the Roman army. This potential revelation emerged from an environmental survey in Calabria, a region in southern Italy. While examining the forest, ecologists stumbled upon remnants of a moss-covered wall. They alerted archaeologists, who then conducted a comprehensive investigation using georadar, lidar, magnetometry, and soil analysis, complemented by extensive excavations. The unearthed wall fragment stretches for 2.7 kilometers and was fronted by a deep trench. The absence of gate traces suggests it served as a defensive barrier to impede enemy advancementβ€”a typical feature of Roman legion fortifications from the 1st century BCE. Surrounding the wall, researchers discovered a significant quantity of weaponry, including swords, javelins, and spearheads from that era. The sheer volume and distribution of these artifacts indicate a large-scale and bloody battle occurred at this site. Scholars propose that this wall was constructed by the forces of General Marcus Crassus during the suppression of Spartacus’ rebellion. Barriers and trenches like this, extending approximately 30 kilometers, ultimately trapped Spartacus’ army on a peninsula, preventing their escape to Sicily. Interestingly, Plutarch’s chronicle β€œLife of Crassus” describes such defensive walls in detail. According to his account, Spartacus’ battles with the Romans took place in this part of Italy in 71 BCE, culminating in the rebels’ defeat. Spartacus himself perished in the Battle of the Silarus River.

πŸ‘† How the experiment works: Both female mice were injected with magnetic nanoparticles into their brains, but different receptors and ion channels were introduced for control. The β€œgreen” mouse has mechanosensitive receptors on GABAergic neurons in the hypothalamus, while the β€œred” mouse does not. These particular cells trigger the maternal care patternβ€”if they are blocked, the female won’t pay attention to the pups. When the magnets are activated, the particles start to β€˜tickle’ the mechanosensitive receptors, thus activating the cells. By choosing where to express the receptors, you determine which behavior pattern you will induce. The authors successfully controlled feeding and social behaviors selectively and reversibly, influencing the motivation system in freely moving animals. This innovation comes from Korea’s IBS, and you can find It’s worth noting that the approach using nanoparticles and magnetic fields was pioneered by Polina Anikeeva. Unsurprisingly, the Korean researchers reference her work. Polina graduated from Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and, as of July, heads the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. πŸ‘ P.S. Mechanosensitive channels can also be directly activated by ultrasound, bypassing the need for particles. A recent development from the University of Texas introduces a wearable miniature device for transcranial focused ultrasound stimulation. Weighing only 8.5 grams, it is compatible with EEG and simply attaches to the scalp. These are just glimpses of what’s happening, and they already hint at the future.

Where is the frontier of neurotechnology today? Consider this experiment: two healthy female mice are idly sitting in a chamber. Suddenly, magnets around the chamber are activated. The female mouse marked with green suddenly rushes to the distant mouse pups and brings them to safety. The other female mouse, marked with red, remains indifferent. Scientists have triggered a specific behavior patternβ€”maternal careβ€”in the "green" mouse. This was achieved without any cables or electronics attached to its head, solely using a magnetic field. They could induce other behaviors as well, depending on which neurons were targeted. Now, researchers can gather rodents in one place and simultaneously activate or deactivate various behavior patterns in different individuals. There's no need to worry yetβ€”turning a human into a zombie using magnets is still far from reality. However, we are now a step closer to treating brain diseases. This method allows for non-invasive and selective regulation of specific neural circuits' activity.

The Origin of Bread: A Discovery 14,000 Years in the Making In 2018, archaeologists made a groundbreaking discovery in the Jordanian desert: traces of a 14,000-year-old bread-like mixture. This astonishing find, predating the advent of agriculture by millennia, sheds new light on the culinary practices of ancient hunter-gatherers. The site, abandoned in haste by its inhabitants, featured two primitive ovens where remnants of this ancient bread were found. Using a scanning electron microscope, researchers identified 24 charred fragments as bread, though the exact grain type remains undetermined. The cell structure of the grains suggests they may have been wild einkorn, rye, or millet. Likely, these were unleavened flatbreads, but their precise appearance is unknown. This discovery reveals that the practice of bread-making is far older than previously thought, originating well before the development of farming. The Natufian culture, flourishing around 15,000 to 11,500 years ago in regions now known as Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, is credited with this early culinary achievement. These people had already begun settling in wooden houses, indicating a shift towards a sedentary lifestyle independent of climatic factors. This transition to the Neolithic way of lifeβ€”characterized by settled living, food production, and significant cultural changesβ€”started before the end of the Ice Age. The intriguing question remains: why did these ancient people undergo such a radical transformation in their lifestyle and thinking? What motivated one of the most profound changes in human history?
