My grandfather was a wonderful man; he was humble, righteous, honest, hard working, creative, wise and had the wittiest sense of humour. He had an incredible passion for music, art and culture, and an insatiable hunger for knowledge.
All the alternative healing cures and methods that are now mainstream, he knew and practiced over 50 years ago. He knew about herbs and teas, about detox methods (I grew up taking activated carbon!), about reflexology, about meridians, about frequencies, about the benefits of bicarbonate soda, about the importance of sunlight, he knew about everything… and yet he knew, that he knew nothing. His quest for knowledge never stopped.
He was a self-made man who achieved great professional and financial success, until he placed his trust on his brother in law, who would eventually strip him from absolutely everything he owned.
When most people are thinking of retiring, my grandad had to start all over again from scratch. As a little girl, I remember him working endless hours, seven days a week. He would eat standing up because he had no time to sit, he had to accept projects in far away lands and work with people he would have previously never considered.
When he lost everything, he came close to the unthinkable, but somehow he picked himself up and kept going, never looking back. Many years later, I asked my mum about what had saved him, she looked me in the eyes and smiling she said, “You”.
I was born just after the ‘sh*t hit the fan’. When all had been lost, the first grandchild arrived to lighten up the scene, a baby girl with huge bright eyes, would somehow bring joy back to a family dealing with an extremely painful situation.
In a sense, everything I still do, is to try and lighten up everyone’s scene. I don’t know how effective I am in my endeavour, though I do get the most beautiful emails from many of you, but what I have always known, is that it’s in the trying, in the intention and in the giving of love without expectations, that life becomes better for everyone you touch.
Let’s all try to be a light that brightens someone else’s scene, you never know how dark it might just currently be for others…
