Large Korean Study Links COVID-19 Vaccination to Autoimmune Disorders (Vitiligo)
Physician-scientist Eun Mi Chun at Ewha Womans University in Seoul Korea, and a group of colleagues sought to investigate the autoimmune AEs after COVID-19 vaccination from a population-based cohort in South Korea. Why? They researched this due to the growing evidence that COVID-19 vaccination could affect immune system regulation leading to the development of autoimmune diseases. In this well-designed large study of 4,203,887 participants, representing 50% of the population residing in Seoul via the National Health Insurance Service database, this study population was divided into two groups on the basis of COVID-19 vaccination. Thereafter, the team generated cumulative incidence, hazard ratios (HRs) assessing 95% confidence intervals of autoimmune adverse events post COVID-19 vaccination. The investigators here found in a 4.2 million study, a clear connection to vitiligo; an autoimmune adverse event substantially higher in the COVID-19 vaccinated group compared with the controls. This large Korean study finds…
