When it's time to attach something to your barn's corrugated roof, screw it into the TOP of a rib, NOT in the valley. For added protection you can place a small stripe of caulk an inch above the screw to force water around the caulk and around the screw.

Drip Loops. Water loves to follow along a wire and often right into your wall. The solution is a drip loop. Give the water a low point to fall off of before it enters your house. Also, if you are driling thru a wall, try to drill upward from the outside so water doesn't migrate in so much.

When you get into really large electrical wire, it is often aluminum. Service entrance cables are almost exclusively aluminum. American Wire Gauge wires get larger as the gauge numbers get smaller until we get to AWG 0. Then they start denoting larger wires by 1/0, 2/0, 4/0 (pronounced 4-aught). Aluminum is cheaper than copper but it has two drawbacks... it likes to form an oxide that is less conductive on it's skin and it has a higher thermal expansion. Carefully strip the jacketing but do NOT score or nick the conductors. If you do they will fatigue later and break. Grab a tube of "No-ox" from lowes and some emery cloth. Scrub the wire good with a "no ox" soaked piece of emery cloth. Tighten the wire under a lug. Now wait 5 min. Gain another 1/4 turn on the lug. Wait another 5 minutes and gain another fraction of a turn. 3 times of this should be good.

Batteries for the past week or two... the deepest discharge was intentional to test the inverters going on grid and getting a small boost. I charged the car from batteries to make sure they ran down. Otherwise we haven't had to draw from the grid. This is 13kw of solar and 75kwh of batteries running a "good sized house". No compromises here.

If you are not a diy type this is a good deal. Recently the price of lithium batteries has dropped significantly and I can build the same capacity battery for about $2000. Depends where your priorities and abilities are.

Tip for US/north american split phase people. It used to be common to run power to a light fixture and then run only two wires to the switch. The problem with this is that you don't have a neutral later on when you want to install a smart switch or a dimmer. Although ground has the same potential as neutral, you cannot use ground as a current carrying conductor. So the new NEC code says you run power to the switch first and then run two wires and ground to the lamp. The first image in gray is incorrect, the second image with the blue box is correct.

So teh way my system is laid out is that I have ~13kw making power inside the house. If my battery gets charged fully, I'll connect to the grid and sell power from that 13kw of inverters. Also, I have a 8kw that is connected to an inverter that is export only. My plan was to run the house off the13kw part of solar and export/import enough power to run the cars. The light blue line is the power exported each day and resets at midnight. Dark blue is total power made including that exported amount. The orange/red/purple areas under 0 on this graph are each of the EVs. The fact that despite driving all three cars two days ago and two trips to town in my car yesterday, I have yet to need more power than I've exported. That light blue line has never gone below 0. Also we've had about 3 or 4 cloudy days in a row, batteries haven't hit 100% in a few days, but I haven't needed to connect the house to the grid either... we're just coasting along!
