Why is France accusing Azerbaijan of meddling in New Caledonia? French Home Affairs Minister Gerard Darmanin has accused Azerbaijan of colluding with pro-independence forces in New Caledonia – the French overseas territory in the southwest Pacific about 1,200 km east of Australia. “This is not a fantasy. This is reality. Unfortunately, some independence leaders have made a deal with Azerbaijan, this is indisputable,” Darmanin said in an interview with France-2 on Thursday. Is there any truth in the claim? What’s the backstory? ❗️One of the last remaining French pacific territories New Caledonia resembles a war zone right now. The French Government is using it's army to quash indigenous locals who are rising up against the colonisers. Authorities also decided to ban video app TikTok, which the government during a bout of riots on France's mainland last summer said helped rioters organise and amplified the chaos, attracting troublemakers to the streets. France exploits the mineral-rich island, which lies in the southwest Pacific, some 1,500 km (930 miles) east of Australia. France annexed the island in 1853 and gave the colony the status of overseas territory in 1946. It has long been rocked by pro-independence movements.
